What Families, Teachers, and Leaders Are Seeing

What happens when kids start helping animals — and realize their kindness can make a difference.

This is what happens when kids realize they can help.

Letters become confidence. Art becomes action. Compassion becomes something they can actually do.

★★★★★

“We want to give a massive shoutout to Kids for Paws for creating this amazing video and heartfelt letter for our very own Mr. Krabs — and we are so grateful for the kindness, compassion, and joy they spread to dogs like him. Mr. Krabs has been adopted!

“My daughter wrote 12 letters in one afternoon and hasn’t stopped talking about ‘her dogs’ since. Now when we visit the shelter, she sees them differently. She cares. She asks if they found homes. This changed something in her.”

Sarah Mitchell Parent · Austin, TX
★★★★★

“I added this to my classroom thinking it would just be a writing activity. It turned into something completely different. The empathy is real. The kids stay engaged for weeks, and their writing improved without me forcing it.”

Ana Rivera 3rd Grade Teacher · Denver, CO
★★★★★

“We used this for our Cub Scout den and I’ve never seen the boys this invested. They weren’t just completing a requirement — they actually cared. They even argued over who got to read their letter out loud first.”

Common questions

Answers for parents, teachers & Scout leaders

If you have a question that isn’t here, email us — we reply to every message.

What ages is this for?
Primarily 6–14, but we have templates and project ideas for kids as young as 4 (with parent help) and as old as 17. Younger kids tend to gravitate toward art and coloring; older kids often prefer video or letter-writing.
Does the shelter actually read the letters?
Yes — and many shelters do more than that. Letters are often added to the animal’s file or hung on their kennel so visitors can read them too. Several featured animals — like Mr. Krabs with National Mill Dog Rescue — have been adopted after being featured.
Do we have to mail anything physically?
It’s up to you. Most families share their letters or art digitally — you photograph or scan it and send it to us, and we handle the rest. But if your child wants to mail their Pen Pals for Paws letter directly to a shelter, or drop it off at their local shelter in person, we love that too. Both options work.
What if my kid isn’t comfortable writing or drawing?
There are four ways to participate — Pen Pals for Paws (letters), Art for Paws (drawings and crafts), Voice for Paws (videos), and Kindness in Action (collecting supplies or visiting shelters). Most kids find at least one that fits.
How do you protect kids’ privacy and safety?
We never publish a child’s full name or location without explicit parental consent, and we review every submission before sharing. Kids can participate completely anonymously if their family prefers.
How do schools, classrooms, or Scout troops get involved?
Email hello@kidsforpaws.com and tell us about your group. We have a separate onboarding track with lesson plans, group project kits, and certificates for every participant — whether you’re a classroom, Scout troop, or homeschool co-op.
